Speed to the West |
|
| The Cornish Riviera Express, probably one of the most famous trains on the Great Western Railway, had its name derived from a competition in The Railway Magazine in 1904. 1,286 entries were received with a prize offered of 3 guineas. Known affectionately as The Limited, departure was 10.30am prompt from Paddington Station, London, taking around 4 hours to reach Plymouth, with coaches being slipped en route for Westbury, Exeter in Devon and Taunton in Somerset. | The whole journey to Penzance, Cornwall was completed in 6 hours and 20
minutes. The Cornish Riviera can today be reached by train from Paddington in about six hours and the sea view from the train as it rushes along the coast, right next to the sea wall at Dawlish Warren in south Devon is timeless. |
